Technique Information
Origin of the Material
The material I use for my work comes from Chilean sheep's wool, specifically from the south-central region of the country. This fiber has a high fat content, making it unique and perfect for this artisanal technique.
Artisan Process
Each piece goes through a manual process carried out by artisans from Pelluhue, in the Maule region: Shearing: Cutting the sheep's hair. Cleaning and carding: Manual preparation of the fiber. Natural dyeing: Using native elements such as onion skin, cochineal, tree bark, among others.
Carded Felt Technique
The carded felt I use, thanks to its high oil content, allows the special needle to interlock the fibers more densely. It's necessary to insert the needle repeatedly for the material to adhere evenly to the fabric. From this base, I work the color layer by layer, representing highlights, shadows, lines, and all the details I imagine.
Arte Fran Moreno
I am a Chilean textile artist and teacher. I research and work with the traditional needle felting technique on fabric, giving my work a new exhibition medium and materiality. He realizado exposiciones y clases de mi investigación a nivel internacional, colaborando con instituciones culturales en Francia, Canadá y Ecuador."
Fiber selection
We use Chilean sheep hair from the south-central part of the country, carefully sheared, cleaned and hand-carded by artisans from Pelluhue.
Traditional dyeing
Each fiber is dyed using ancestral methods, using natural elements such as onion, cochineal, and native bark to achieve unique colors.
Needle creation
We work the felt layer by layer, interlacing the fibers with a special needle to give shape, light and shadow to each imagined design.
